AIRCAT 1150 Impact Wrench

The AIRCAT 1150 is a lightweight and rugged composite 1/2 inch drive air impact wrench. Boasting an incredible 1295 foot pounds of maximum nut-busting reverse torque is really impressive for an impact gun in this price range. Forward tightening torque is rated at 900 ft-lbs, which is more than sufficient for practically any job you can throw at it. The 1150 features a twin hammer design that produces 1400 blows per minute for maximum hard-hitting power.

The continuous air consumption rating for the 1150 is 8 SCFM at 90 - 120 PSI working pressure. The average air consumption drops to around 4.3 SCFM. What this means is that a commercial shop with a large air compressor will have no problems powering the 1150 to its full power capacity. However, for the home or farm user you'll either need a sufficient compressor or you'll need to wait for your tank to fill with intermittent use. In either case AIRCAT recommends a direct connection to a 3/8 or larger diameter air hose of 25 feet or shorter length for maximum power.

AIRCAT pneumatic tools are assembled in the USA and are of good quality construction.  AIRCAT's 2 year parts and labor warranty is comparable to the big name air impact wrenches, some costing more than two or three times as much.. All in all this is a very solid air gun for the money.

AIRCAT, and most reviews from professional mechanics, claim this tool is quieter than similar competitive impact wrenches. AIRCAT utilizes a patented tuned exhaust muffler technology to reduce the noise level to a tolerable 86 dB without sacrificing power. This would be an excellent bonus for a shop with many air guns, to help reduce the overall noise level.

To help relieve tool operator stress and fatigue, the 1150 features a patented ergonomically designed handle and lightweight composite case. Weighing 4.63 pounds the tool is and easy to handle and operate.

The best thing about this tool is the value. At the time of this review the AIRCAT 1150 retail price was right around $150. That is an extremely competitive price point for a 1/2 impact wrench of this quality and power.

What we didn't like - With over 1900 user reviews, the AIRCAT 1150 is the most popular 1/2" air gun sold on Amazon. Although the overwhelming majority of reviews were 5 star, there were a few complaints, which we will discuss. Several reviewers complained that the AIRCAT 1150 is not quite as quiet as advertised. This may be due to the fact that although the tool is advertised as quiet, its in relation to the noise produced by similar competitor's tools. No air tools, especially pneumatic wrenches, are quiet. Others didn't like the feel of the trigger, this may be a user preference due to the fact that many reviewers liked the trigger's operation. A few complained that the wrench wasn't as hard hitting as stated which could be caused by an undersized air compressor, hose or quick-connect fittings.

The AIRCAT1150 Killer Torque Twin Hammer Impact Wrench is a mid-priced powerhouse. This gun is Amazon's Choice for "air impact wrench 1/2 inch" with hundreds of 4 & 5 star positive reviews from satisfied buyers.

AIRCAT 1150 vs Competition

AIRCAT 1150 vs Earthquake XT

The Harbor freight Earthquake XT has very similar specs to the AIRCAT 1150. The main differences are:

  • the Earthquake has a little less bolt breakaway torque, 1190 ft. lbs. vs 1295 ft. lbs. for the 1150.
  • Top speed is only 700 RPM on the XT vs 900 RPM on the AIRCAT 1150.
  • Harbor Freight's tool warranty is only 90 days vs 2 years for the AIRCAT.
  • The XT is priced lower at around $125 vs around $150 for the 1150.

For the small difference in price, I would choose the AIRCAT 1150, however the choice is up to you depending on your circumstances.

AIRCAT 1150 vs NITROCAT 1200K

The AIRCAT 1150 and the NITROCAT 1200K are very similar 1/2 air impact wrenches, both are made by AIRCAT and very close in price.

The main difference is the 1150 uses a twin-hammer design vs the 1200K's twin-clutch design. According to AIRCAT, the NITROCAT 1200K is better suited for heavy duty frame work on medium to heavy duty trucks. Also note that twin-clutch design air guns do not recommend the use of torque sticks. If you use them, you'll want to stick with the twin-hammer AIRCAT 1150.

AIRCAT 1150 vs Ingersoll Rand 2235

Like the other AIRCAT 1150 competitors, the Ingersoll Rand 2235TiMAX is a very similar pneumatic wrench.

The main difference you'll notice between the 1150 vs the IR2235 is the price. While the AIRCAT is priced around $150, the IR is over $275. Don't get me wrong, the Ingersoll Rand 2235TiMAX is an excellent air gun with a bit more reverse torque at 1350 foot pounds vs 1190  foot pounds for the AIRCAT, but is it worth close to twice the price. That is a decision only you can make. You won't be disappointed with either choice, these are both great air guns.

AIRCAT 1150 vs Snap-On MG725

The Snap-On MG725 is an excellent air gun. Snap-On quality and two year warranty, however also comes along with a Snap-On price tag. The MG725 has excellent speed control and plenty of power, but with a $580 price its hard to compare to the $150 AIRCAT 1150.

The AIRCAT 1150 includes a 2 year parts & labor warranty. Wearable parts are replaceable.

The AIRCAT 1150 is one of the most popular 1/2" air impact guns sold today, and for good reason. AIRCAT is a US company, founded in 1998, that produces a wide variety of high quality pneumatic tools. Like most AIRCAT tools, the 1150 utilizes patented tuned exhaust muffler technology that reduces noise substantially while retaining power. The AIRCAT 1150 Killer Torque impact gun makes quick work of highly torqued or rusted bolts while keeping the noise level at 86 dBA.

Impact guns like the AIRCAT 1150 are great if you are a mechanic or avid DIYer that works on machinery. There is really no substitute for the nut busting torque of a powerful air impact wrench. A few clicks and a fast spin and that stubborn lug nut is off. No more busting your knuckles with breaker bars and cheaters, a quick pull of the trigger and you're done.

Just make sure you have a large enough compressor with ample CFM to power your new gun and you'll be good to go. Higher PSI compressors and larger air storage tanks can compensate somewhat for marginal CFM output compressors to allow limited operation of air impact guns.
